Wrist Ankle Stocks
In Medieval Europe misbehaving apprentices and other miscreants were frequently punished by being locked in the Stocks for a day. The miscreant was first securely locked in the Stocks, which were generally located in a very public place, such as the Town Market Square as additional punishment and for all their friends to see and mock for the day. Frequently the apprentices' wrists as well as his ankles were locked in the Stocks also which forced him to remain in a helpless, immobile and uncomfortable sitting position. This was an effective punishment which humiliated the miscreant, and undoubtedly motivated him to be more conscientious in the performance of his assigned tasks in the future.
