Pranger

In Medieval Europe misbehaving apprentices and other miscreants were frequently punished by being locked in a Pranger for a day. The miscreant was first securely locked in the Pranger, then lead around the town on a chain attached to the Pranger by the Sheriffs man accompanied by a drummer and the town crier who shouted out the miscreants name and offence. Next the miscreant was led at the end of a chain to the town market square and there the Pranger was securely locked to a post in the market square as an additional punishment and for all to see and mock for the day. This was an effective punishment which left the apprentice able to perform those tasks assigned by his master the following day, yet undoubtedly motivated an apprentice to be more conscientious in the performance of his assigned tasks in the future.

 

Mstr Alex now makes a modern version of this device available to assist Masters in training, discipline and motivation.
